IEI Interns have found that their summer experience sets them apart when they apply to college, look for future internships, and go on job interviews. Their experience working at a leading British company or studying at Cavendish College, along with their letters of recommendation, polished portfolios and journal entries, have given them a competitive advantage. Here’s a sampling of their experiences.
“Hello IEI! I will be attending the college of arts and sciences at New York University next year. I honestly believe that the newspaper I created while in the Journalism Media & design Programme boosted my resume and impressed the admissions officers. Not many students can say they studied abroad at a premier London college before the end of high school. Thanks for everything!”Alex Pack, IEI 2007 New York University

“On my college applications, I wrote about my experience working at Piper Jaffray, a London investment bank, where I witnessed mergers, IPOs, and other transactions – and how IEI helped me confirm my interest in pursuing a career in business. I got into the college of my choice!” Michael Tesser, IEI 2006 University of Pennsylvania Wharton School

“When I applied to colleges, I mentioned how I studied Video Production in London at Cavendish College. Because I want to be a film major, it definitely helped in the admissions process.” Carly Berg, IEI 2006 Indiana University

“When applying to six competitive colleges, I used my summer with IEI in every application, whether it was a three-page essay about how I will contribute to a diverse community or two lines in a resume. My experience living independently in London and working at Jimmy Choo helped me stand out from the crowd.”Kerri Pinchuk, IEI 2006 University of Maryland

“The day I left for London was a difficult day for me, but I overcame my issues and grew stronger in the process. I drew upon this experience for use in my main college application essay."Claire Shapiro, IEI 2006 Cornell University

“I used my experience with my IEI Public Relations Internship in several ways when applying to colleges. I wrote about my PR internship in an essay for Michigan and USC, which asked about my interests. I shared a certain experience I had in London in my main common application essay; it was in conjunction with a deeper life lesson. I wrote about how I thought everything went wrong on my first internship day, but it was really a matter of figuring out the city and the culture. In my George Washington University supplement to the common app, I wrote about how my experience living in London let me know that I wanted to go to school in a city."Haley Friedlich, IEI 2006 George Washington University

“For my college application, I was able to include a letter of recommendation from my Hotel Management Internship, which helped me get into Boston University’s amazing program in hospitality administration. Also, my experience in the field was seen as advantageous.”Julie Sutula, IEI 2005 Boston University

“The advanced photo techniques I learned in the IEI Photography Workshop helped me create the portfolio that I submitted to multiple art schools around the country. It ultimately helped me get into my top choice, Cornell University, where I’m in the college of Architecture, Art and Planning.” Anya Graetch, IEI 2005 Cornell University

“Since my IEI Journalism Workshop, I have found what I want to pursue as a career. The experience guided me in making this decision and gave me the necessary skills to land a summer internship at KQED, a Northern California-based public broadcasting company. Also, after writing the front-page article for the IEI newspaper, I returned to high school with a new passion; my experience allowed me to be noticed and selected by my school newspaper.”
Kavita Shah, IEI 2005 Stanford University
“Having solid work experience during my Public Relations Internship helped me get involved in the International Business Club at Harvard my freshman year and also proved invaluable in future job applications.” Russell Graney, IEI 2003 Associate Consultant, Bain & Company, NY

“Participating in the IEI Law Internship program was a great way to experience a different work culture and prepare me for internships that I would hold in my future.” Scott Zucker, IEI 2003 George Washington University

“The photography portfolio I created in London during my Media & Design Workshop was a huge help in the whole process when I applied to Syracuse University.” Jenna Todd, IEI 2001 Syracuse University

“My IEI Business/Finance Internship helped me with my intern experiences through the summers in college. Having the experience on my résumé made me stand out from the rest of the pack.” Matthew Godoff, IEI 1999 President, Abbott Advisors, LLC.

“My applications to college and medical school were greatly strengthened by my experience at IEI. The schools were very impressed that I had taken the time to explore my future career in such detail, and my experience was so unique that they were intrigued.” Dr. Jason Reichenberg, IEI 1994 Director of Dermatology, University of Texas in Austin
