A Silver Lining
Hilary Bernstein, Auction House

My Internship at Sotheby’s was an extraordinary experience. Not for a moment did my efforts include a trip to the coffee machine or any other stereotypical Intern’s chores; instead, I was responsible for organizing and often starting the catalogue archives.

While in the furniture department, I had the pleasure of experiencing a live auction. I sat among the buyers as an observer. I absolutely loved watching the numerous paddles fly, each one denoting a higher value. Each time, my colleagues’ faces brightened more and more at the prospect of a sale. After two weeks, the quick-paced atmosphere of the furniture department was replaced by the calmer one of the silver department. There was no auction to be held during this rotation, so I had more of an opportunity to see the normal happenings and chemistry of the office as a whole.

I became quick and great friends with my co-workers and felt that both my work and my presence were wonderfully appreciated. Each day and at each location, my Internship presented me with a new challenge which, although sometimes a bit daunting, was in the end always enjoyable and enriching. I only hope that I am lucky enough to work in an environment such as Sotheby’s in my future professional life.
