At Your Service
Elliot Finkel, Hotel Management

On my first day at the Four Seasons Hotel I was sent to room service. I followed a waiter around and polished glasses. The same thing happened the next day and I asked myself, “How am I learning anything from this?” On the third day I went to my preceptor, who worked in human resources, and told her how I felt. She explained that room service was one of the most difficult jobs and that I had to change my perspective. I had to start looking at the jobs I was given from my manager’s point of view and ask myself why I was doing this job and how it would benefit the hotel.

Since then, I got to attend some meetings, which showed me how everything needed to be up to the “Four Seasons’ Standards.” I began change my attitude and did not mind working as a waiter. The new employees had to go through training; managers from each department explained their jobs to me, and I was able to learn more about the hotel as a whole organization.

Even though I mostly worked as a waiter, I also worked in accounting for two days and in human resources for a day. Through this Internship I got a peek into what it is like to run a hotel. Although I did not learn a lot about the business aspects of a hotel, I learned a lot of lessons that will help me in any field I may pursue.
