A Vital Role Ayushi Gummadi, Medicine
For my Medical Internship, I worked in the histopathology lab of St. John’s Institute of Dermatology in St. Thomas’s Hospital. Even though they do not physically interact with patients, the biomedical scientists who I worked with play a vital role in patient health and well being. While my preceptor specialized in attaching antibodies to antigens, which I had several opportunities to do, I was mostly working in the main lab with the rest of the technicians. The majority of the work involved biopsies, which were cut up and made into slides and then examined microscopically for melanoma or lymphoma lesions. My very first week I saw a melanoma-positive tumor the size of a football, which had been excised from the patient’s back. I had the unique opportunity follow its route through different stages, before it ended up as a report sent to the doctor.Every day the work gets harder and more fascinating. I started off observing and now I’m treated as one of the staff and given jobs to complete. I’ll even get the chance to observe a Moh’s clinic, which is a facial tumor excision process done in several stages through local anesthesia. Overall, this Internship has given me a behind-the-scenes insight into the field of medicine. I’m really glad that I got this work experience at such a young age; on top of being an amazing experience, it will also be of great benefit in the future.
