Exploring Clinical Chemistry
Jasmyn Johal, Medicine

My experience as a Medical Intern at Hammersmith Hospital has been fascinating and rewarding. I never thought I could learn so much about different aspects of clinical chemistry. We spent the first two weeks working with machines and the different ways they test blood samples for certain diseases. Toward the end of the Internship we got to see exactly how the results of the tests directly affect the patients in the wards. POCT (Point of Care in Training) allowed us to see the neonatology unit where premature babies are born, as well as the emergency rooms.

We visited other hospitals in the National Health Service trust, where we were introduced to more specific areas of medicine, such as oncology (cancer) and pediatrics. We were fortunate enough to visit a private laboratory and compare staff, procedure, and overall atmosphere in relation to the public service everyone is provided.

Exploring these fields has given us background knowledge and more insight into our future careers and how hard we should continue working to get there. I have had an amazing time with this work experience, and I can’t wait to go home and apply these newly acquired skills to my daily life.
