Exploring the Archives Tyler Mintz, Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising
I had a fantastic first week at my internship at News International. The men who were in charge of training us for two days and teaching us about the company met us in the lobby. They were extremely funny and energetic and I had a great time with them. On Wednesday, I reported to my actual preceptor, who was equally friendly and enthusiastic. It’s cool that I have my own login for my computer and a corporate e-mail address.
I spent Thursday and Friday in the advertising design department. I spent hours working at the computer (with Photoshop) creating interesting but complicated work pages for newspapers. I got the work done so quickly that I will be spending a week in this department instead of just one day as originally planned. I will also be working with video, and I can’t wait.
One day I visited the company’s archives. It was truly amazing. I saw letters from politicians and authors and old newspaper articles. The man who worked there even showed me a letter from Winston Churchill that is estimated to be worth about $25,000. There are also letters from Charles Dickens and Oscar Wilde, and a telegram announcing that Kennedy was shot.
