Living Like the Locals
Daniela Reichelstein, Law

From the start, I have attempted to fit into and wander the streets in the stylish shoes of a true Londoner. Taking public transportation, namely the Tube, allows me to witness the fast-paced lives of business people, frantically jostling the morning crowd in order to arrive at work on time. In just one week, I have become a part of this mad rush.

I am constantly taken aback by how friendly and helpful Londoners are. On my first internship day, I would have been late, because I had not exactly found 9-12 Bell Yard Chambers during the “dry run.” I stopped an older man, who was scampering to work as well, and I asked for directions. He went out of his way to walk half a mile with me in order to point it out.

In America, especially in New York City, it would have proven a miracle if one of the locals managed to mutter a series of brief instructions upon my plea for help. They would never have accompanied me to my destination.

I have immensely enjoyed every minute of London. I am just now beginning to capture what were at first glimpses of a thriving cosmopolitan group of people. I witness the frantic rush to work each morning, the hour-long lunch breaks at quaint sandwich shops, the liveliness of the pubs in the evening, and evening entertainment, such as the theatre.

It is only by actively immersing ourselves in the culture of the people that we are able to gain the full experience and adventure of traveling. I have certainly enjoyed assuming a completely novel lifestyle for one month!
