First Day on the Job Blair Winston, Law
The night before my Law Internship, I was anxious and excited to start, but waking up that morning, the butterflies got worse as I got ready to depart. I felt sort of silly on the Tube surrounded by actual professionals, while here I was almost playing dress up.
Upon arrival at my building, I was cheerfully greeted by one of the clerks. Even though I was given the initial task of filing payment notices, the work was brightened up by the friendly chitchat with some coworkers and general nonchalant atmosphere of the office. After just an hour and a half, I was directed on how to make my way down to the courthouse. I spent the rest of the afternoon observing the beginning of a three-day trial addressing cocaine possession with intent to sell. It was interesting to observe the opening statements and interrogation of a witness in such close proximity, opposed to on a television screen. Afterward, I spoke with the lawyer for the prosecution and then headed home.
After a first day as exciting as mine, I felt less awkward on the Tube heading back to the dorms. I realized no one was really judging me; I was just another person returning from work that day.
