Question. Where do the Interns come from?Answer. Our Interns are a diverse group of students from all parts of the United States and Canada.
Question. Do most teens come with a friend? Answer. No. We always have a large number of Interns who come to London by themselves; they easily make new friends and tell us these friendships are one of the highlights of their summer.
Question. What’s the dorm food like? Answer. It’s typical British dorm food, with the same menu choices that University of London students have during the school year. A typical English breakfast (cereal, fruit, yogurt, eggs, sausage, baked beans and tomatoes) and a three-course dinner are provided in the self-service dining rooms. Dinner choices include a vegetarian option; you can see a sample menu by clicking here. Once a week, we go out on the town for a group dinner.
Question. What kind of supervision do you provide? Answer. Our programme is one of the few in which a Director lives with the students. All IEI staff members live in the dorm with the Interns and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students are given appropriate privileges and freedoms with clear boundaries. Sunday through Thursday, Interns must be in the dorm by 11:00 pm and in their rooms by midnight. Friday and Saturday, Interns must be in the dorm by 11:00 pm and in their rooms by 12:30 am. Interns also sign-in with their Resident Assistant when they return to the dorm in the evening.
Question. What’s the difference between an Internship and a Media & Design Workshop? Answer. In an Internship, you are plunged into the working world; you learn about a career by working alongside professionals in their place of business. Interns wear professional attire -- suits and ties for men, suits or blouses and skirts for women. If you choose an Internship placement, you may be the only IEI Intern -- or one of a few. In a Media & Design Workshop, you explore an area of interest in exciting project-based workshops led by accomplished professionals. You will be working in small groups with other IEI Interns. The dress code is more casual.
Question. Why London? Answer. London is an exciting and safe international city without language barriers. From high tea to high fashion, London is a vibrant mix of old and new and is packed full of cultural treasures. From their home in the Halls of Residence at the University of London in Russell Square, Interns have easy access to London’s historic sites, museums, theatres and street markets.
Question. Why IEI? Answer. As sisters and business partners, we’ve been bringing Interns to London since 1987, making ours the oldest and most experienced Internship programme. As the parents of an IEI alum wrote, “The IEI experience exceeded our expectations in so many ways. IEI is one of the best-managed summer programs we have seen. Your planning, preparations and organization were so careful, thorough and efficient that it was difficult for a parent to find anything to worry about!”
