With its Internships and travel, IEI offers a wide variety of summer experiences. Please call us for details about specific placements.
Eligibility This co-educational, international program accepts high school students, including graduating seniors. Our Internships Programmes are open to students ages 16 to 18. IEI is looking for self-directed and responsible teenagers who are excited by the opportunity to live and learn in London for a summer.
Further Information After acceptance, you will receive orientation materials, including a BritKit© (IEI's summer guide), a list of dress requirements for your specific program, a general packing list, travel information, medical forms and all of the other information you need. Interns will also receive additional course materials describing their pre-departure assignment. Please don't hesitate to call the IEI office closest to you should you have any further inquiries.
Housing IEI students live in a comfortable, secure Residence Hall at the University of London: Commonwealth Hall. This dorm is centrally located with instant access to the heart of London. Every room is a single with communal baths. They are comfortably furnished with a bed, desk and chair, wardrobe and a private phone. The dorm also has common rooms and TV lounges. Reception desk is manned 24 hours a day; public telephones and laundry facilities are available. A weekly cleaning service delivers fresh towels, vacuums, and provides bed linens. The dorm faces an elegant Georgian crescent with historical buildings and gated gardens. Tennis and squash courts, pool and Ping Pong are available for the Interns' use. A full English breakfast and a three-course evening meal (with vegetarian options) are provided in the spacious, self-service dining rooms. The dorm is supervised by university staff as well as by IEI staff. The surrounding Russell Square neighborhood, a 10-minute walk from the British Museum, is friendly and cozy and offers all the conveniences of home -- cleaners, supermarket, chemist (drug store), movie theatre and health food store. The Russell Square, King's Cross and Euston Station Tube stops are within easy walking distance.
Intern's Responsibility
We encourage our Interns to develop a sense of responsibility and maturity and to act in a sensible, considerate and cooperative manner in preparation for college and the future. IEI Interns are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled Internship programs, group excursions, day trips, meetings and related events. Interns are expected to maintain their rooms and common areas, respect the rights and property of others, and adhere to curfew and to the general rules of IEI and the principles of good conduct including zero tolerance for drugs and alcohol. We appreciate your thoughtful consideration of others for the benefit of all.
Programme Changes
Dates, events, itineraries, Internships and instructors may be changed without notice. Intern Exchange International reserves the right to cancel any program or to decline to accept any person as an Intern in one of its programmes. The full fee will be refunded if IEI cancels the entire programme.
Rewards and Awards Upon successful completion of the entire program, Interns may receive letters of recommendation from their placement and Intern Exchange International. Former Interns have used their internship experience and their letters of recommendation to great advantage when applying for college admissions, as well as when seeking future job opportunities.
Travel Arrangements To ensure that our arrival and departure days run smoothly, all students from the USA must take our IEI-escorted group flight from New York’s JFK airport to London’s Heathrow. Our flight departs the USA on the evening of July 1st and arrives at approximately 9:00am on the morning of July 2nd. International students should book flights to arrive at approximately the same time and date. Additional IEI representatives will meet the incoming flight in the Arrivals Hall and escort them to the dorm. On the final day of the programme, staff will escort the Interns to the airport and assist with the departure. For students on our group flights, IEI provides escorted, private coach transfers to/from London Heathrow Airport for $120.00 round trip. Full information on how to make travel plans will be provided to participants in our BritKit©. To enter the United Kingdom, students need a valid passport that will not expire during the programme; visas are not required for holders of U.S. passports.
